“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Many people today view life as a series of “to do lists” – multitasking in a frantic effort to balance a myriad of work, family, personal, social, and financial responsibilities. Have you ever had one of those days where you’re just an inch away from crashing and burning, striving for perfection in every aspect of your life? Often what drops to the bottom of the list, or gets postponed to a later date, is our personal health and wellness.
Don’t get me wrong, we all have the best of intentions. Everyone is aware that we need to eat better, join the gym, take time to relax, stop watching TV, and get off the couch. What is true in our country, however, is that although we are one of the wealthiest on the planet with access to the most abundant food supply available, the United States falls to the bottom of the rankings when it comes to rampant obesity and chronic sickness in Western society.
How did this happen? Where did we go off course? Let’s consider these questions from the perspective of priorities.
What I hear on a regular basis is the statement, “I wish I could, but I don’t have the time,” along with, “I sure would like to but I don’t have the money.” What appears to be happening is that we’re pulled in so many competing directions – work, our customers, family (including the needs of our children), maintaining the house and yard, commitments to friends, community obligations – the list goes on and on. In reality, what’s happening is that many of us unwittingly place other priorities ahead of our health and wellness because we are overwhelmed and are in reaction mode as each crisis arises throughout the day. Essentially, our priorities are in reverse order.
I invite you to stop for a brief moment to get in touch with this truth: If you have your health, you have everything. If your health is compromised it affects every aspect of your life.
There is no time better than NOW to reprioritize and make your health and wellbeing your #1 priority. A shift of this magnitude will require commitment, perseverance, letting go of old patterns and surrounding yourself with as many supporters as you can. “The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.” Oliver Wendell Holmes
